Hello Everyone,
My name is Nancy. I am, above all things, a beloved child of God and a lover of Jesus Christ. I am a mother of two, and grandmother of four. I was born in Baltimore MD, the sixth of seven siblings – five brothers and one sister. Shortly after my birth, we moved to the Ohio area.
My childhood was marked by trauma, and while I’d so love to have the liberty of distancing myself from that statement, and that reality, I have come to realize and embrace the fact that my traumatic childhood has shaped aspects of who I am, as well as the writer I have become. I write to inspire hope in the broken and wounded, to encourage, to strengthen others, and mostly, to glorify God.
Looking back, I recall being a very contemplative child, never talking much, but always brooding over thoughts that ran deeper than my years. Those times when it seemed as though I had spoken too many words, I would have nightmares that all my teeth had turned to mush and had fallen out of my mouth. It was better for me to write, I concluded. Thus, my love for journaling and writing began, as far back as grade school.
I graduated from Shaker Heights High School, and later moved to Brooklyn, New York, where I attended Pratt Institute, graduating with a Bachelors’ Degree in Communication Design. Some years later, I returned to the Ohio area where I attended seminary at the McCreary Center to become certified in Black Biblical Studies.
I grew up reading such authors as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin and Maya Angelou. Later, I discovered Andrew Murray, Charles Spurgeon, A.W. Tozer, E.M. Bounds and C.S Lewis. They have all influenced my writing to some degree.
I have three favorite books; Andrew Murray’s With Christ in the School of Prayer, Hannah Hurnard’s Hinds’ Feet on High Places, and ranking #1, as the best book I have ever read, is The Holy Bible. It is more than just a good read. The very words of life from Jesus Christ, the One who has captured my heart, and saved my soul, are contained therein. This book has proven to me the power of right words, for time and time again, my blessed Lord and Shepherd of my soul, has sent His Word to find me in those tumultuous seasons when I have lost my sense of purpose and direction. By far, as a seeker of God’s heart, and as a contemplative thinker and writer, I have been more influenced by its message of hope and redemption, and its life-giving, timeless truths, than any other book I have read.
My first book, published in 2012, was entitled Who’s Guarding the Gates?. It was accompanied by Who’s Guarding the Gates? Companion Study Guide. This project took me 15 years to complete. I consider it to have been an assignment from God.
